Identification and Determination of Furfural and HMF Compounds in the hydrolysate from Reed Alcohol-Water hydrolysis Using UV Spectroscopy
A novel and simple method based on the ultraviolet visible spectroscopy for rapid determining the concentration of HMF and furfural in the hydrolysate driving from the biomass biorefinery was developed.A different and wide range of the F and HMF compounds were scanned to achieve their characteristic peaks respectively. The results showed that there is a better linear relationship between maximum absorption wavelength and percentage of the HMF.In addition, the absorbance was also linearly proportional to the concentration of the mixture, which observed the Lambert Beer law. Therefore, the concentration and the percentage of the HMF can be determined based on the wavelength and absorptivity.Compared with old method, this method allows easier calculation and simple pre-treatment prior to UV detection. With the Standard addition method, the recovery of F and HMF is from 93%to 96%and 89%to 92%,respectively.The RSD(relative standard deviation)of F and HMF is from 0.4%to 0.85%and 0.21%to 0.65%,respectively.Overall,the statistical evaluation illustrated that the UV method is highly reproducible and reliable for the determination of furfural and HMF in biomass hydrolysate.
