IMPROVEMENT OF HYP FIBER BONDING CAPABILITY BY TRANSFORMING THE CHARGE DENSITY AND FUNCTIONAL GROUPS ON FIBER SURFACE

High-yield pulp(HYP)has relatively lower inter-fiber bonding capability compared to chemical pulps, which limits its further high proportion or application in more paper grades. There are many parameters influencing the inter-fiber bonding capability, such as the individual fiber strength, fiber morphology, fiber surface charge and functional group content. In this paper, the charge density and functional groups on HYP fiber surface were transformed by chemical and mechanical pretreatment to enhance its inter-fiber bonding capability. The results showed that the fiber surface charge increased significantly with the increase of sulfonic groups(ranges of 0-53.5 mmol/kg,treated chemically)on fiber surface, compared with the mechanically treated fibers. The enhancement of fiber surface charge and more hydrophilic lignin on fiber surface resulted in the improvement of bonding strength index from 2.60 N·m/g to 9.73 N·m/g,while the bulk of sulfonated pulp fibers changed insignificantly. However, the mechanical treatment improved the bonding strength index from 2.60 N·m/g to 9.49 N·m/g with the obvious sacrifice of bulk.Further, the relationship of charge density/functional group content and the fiber bonding strength was provided.
