Optimization of Cold Caustic Extraction Treatment(CCET)of Softwood Bleaching Kraft Pulp by Response Surface Methodology

The present study employed the Box-Behnken Design(BBD)under Response Surface Methodology(RSM)to optimize the Cold Caustic Extraction Treatment(CCET)process and look forthe significantprocess parameter between alkali concentration, pulp consistency, and extraction temperature which are the three main parameters of CCET.Interactive effects of 3 variables of CCET onsoftwood bleaching kraft pulp(SBKP)were carried out in 17 experimental runs with the characterizations ofextracted pulp by α-cellulose content and pentosan content. The result indicated that the optimum condition was alkali concentration,15%; pulp consistency,10%; extraction temperature,20 ℃when α-cellulose content was regarded as the response value.Under the optimized condition, the resulted α-cellulose content could reach up to 98.14%,which was very close to the predicted one, also 13.7%increase in comparison to the original pulp.Among the three parameters, alkali concentration was the most significant parameter in CCET.With increasing of the alkali concentration, the α-cellulose content increased nearly linearly, but the pentosan content decreased first and then increased. This phenomenon suggested that alkali concentration should be cautiously controlled to ensure the maximum removal of hemicellulose when extracted high pentosan content pulp.Compared to the other two parameters, extraction temperature had lessimpact on both α-cellulose content and pentosan content.
