PRODUCTIONOF FURFURAL FROM XYLOSE AND XYLAN VIA A TIN-LOADED MONTMORILLONITE SOLID ACID CATALYST

In the present study, the catalytic transformation of xylose and xylan to furfural in the bio-based 2-methyltetrahydrofuran/H2O biphasic system using montmorillonite with tin ions and SO42-ions(SO42-/Sn-MMT)as a solid acid catalyst were comparatively investigated. The loadingof SO42-ionsin SO42-/Sn-MMTwas shown to improve the furfural yield and selectivity.Furfural yield wasdependent on theinitial concentration of xylose and xylan, the amount of catalyst, and the volume ratio of the organic phase and the aqueous phase as well as the reaction temperature and time. The highest furfural yield was achievedup to 82.63%from xylose, corresponding to 83.03%of furfural selectivity under the optimized reaction conditions(160℃,120min),and the 77.35%furfural yield was obtained from xylan at 160℃ for 90min.The 4:5 volum ratio of the organic/aqueous phase was desirable for xylose and xylan converstion.
