Revealing the chemical structure evolution of cornstalk lignin from bioethanol industry

Bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass is one of the industrialized bio-refining processes. In this process, cornstalk, one kind of the abundant agricultural residues,is widely utilized as feedstock for bioethanol production. With the production of bioethanol, the lignin-rich by-product is obtained, which has also attracted many attentions for its further value-addedutilization.However,the structure transformation of lignin within feedstock during bio-refining remains unknown, which limits the conversion and utilization of the residual lignin. In this work, dioxane lignin(DL),commercial lignin(CL),and milled wood lignin(MWL)were selected outas materials to reveal the chemical structure evolution of lignin during bioethanol processes via FTIR and 2D HSQC NMR.Results showed that main functional groups within lignin after bioethanol processes remained well, but their relative contents changed.Although, the β-O-4 linkages were still the main internal linkages after bio-refining,their quantification decreased from53.35to 15.59(DL)and13.87(CL).Furthermore,demethoxylation reactions occurredduring the bioethanol processes judged by the S/G ratio.Thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)wasfurther introduced toexplore the thermal stability of lignin samples.
