STUCTURAL CHANGES OF BAMBOO LIGNIN DURING FORMIC ACID AND PERFORMIC ACID TREATMENTS

  The delignification is considered as one of the most important reactions during the fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass by formic acid based organosolv process.Structural features of lignin obtained by formic acid fractionationis of vital importance for the production of biofuels as well as other value-added chemicals.In this paper,the milled wood lignin(MWL)of bamboo(Neosinocalamus affinis)was employed toverify the structural changes of lignin during the organosolv fractionation process.Formic acidlignin(FL)and performic acid lignin(PFL)were produced by the treatingof MWLwith 85%formic acidat 140℃(pressure of 0.2 MPa)and 85%formic acidcontaining 2%H2O2 at 101oCunderatmosphericpressure,respectively.The structural features of the ligninobtained under various conditionswere characterized by1Hand 31P nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)spectroscopy,Fouriertransform infrared(FTIR),and size-exclusion chromatography(SEC).The results showed that the MWL of bamboo belongs to p-hydroxyphenyl-guaiacyl-syringyl(H-G-S)type.The decrease in intensities of aryl ether linkages in FL and PFL as compared to the MWL indicated the degradation of lignin during the treatmentprocess.However,the FL hadhigh molecular weight and low polydispersity,indicating the occurrence of serious condensation of lignin following formic acid treatment at a higher temperature.1HNMR and FTIR spectra showed that theformic acid treatment process did not significantly change the core of the lignin structure.In addition,both the FL and PFL had more phenolic hydroxyl than the MWL.Those results suggested that the FL and PFL are promising feed stocksto replace petroleum chemicals.
