Cooperative decomposition of hydrogen peroxide by the lignin-combined transition metals in pulp bleaching
In this study,the effect of lignin-combined manganese,lignin-combined iron,as well as lignin-combined iron and manganese,on decomposing hydrogen peroxide under typical pulp bleaching conditions was investigated.A variety of bleaching stabilizers,ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid(EDTA),sodium silicate(Na2SiO3)and magnesium sulfate(MgSO4),were added individually or in combination,to investigate their effects in controlling lignin-combined metals,manganese,or iron,etc.,induced hydrogen peroxide decomposition.Elemental Analyses,Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry(ICP-AES),were used to study the chemical features of the lignin composites,as well as the amount of metal ions presentin the solution or adsorbed on lignin.The results showed that the hydrogen peroxide decomposition in the presence of lignin-combined transition metals can be represented by a pseudo-first-order kinetics.A pseudo-first-order rate constant(kobs)of peroxide decomposition with lignin-combined iron was 0.0068 min-1,while A pseudo-first-order rate constant(kobs)was 0.0063 min-1with lignin-combined manganese.Synergistic effect of manganese and iron combined with lignin on peroxide decomposition was found to be exist,with a pseudo-first-order rate constant(kobs)of 0.0053 min-1,without any common additions added.Mixed addition of MgSO4,Na2SiO3 and EDTA brought a most positive effect on the reduction of peroxide decomposition with single metalion and lignin.While addition of EDTA individually brought a most positive effect on the reduction of peroxide decomposition with mixed addition of iron and manganese,with a kobs of 0.0004 min-1.
