The Behavioral Characteristics of Microstickies in Papermaking Whitewater Treated by Esterase
Waste paper has become an important raw resource for paper-making industry in all over the world.The most serious problem in paper recycling is the stickies,especially the microstickies in whitewater,which has a severely negative influence on paper machine running and the production quality.As a specific,clean and effective technology,enzyme has applied to resolve the problem in pulping process for many years.But,due to the limit of the measurement technique for microstickies,the role of enzyme for the small particles of stickies in whitewater cant be determinate.This study investigated the behaviors characteristics of the microstickies in paper-making whitewater treated by esterase from mixed office paper(MOP)by using a modified flow cytometer,which can capture the information of the sizes distribution of microstickies in micron level.The results showed the microstickies treated by esterase appeared the slight dispersion trend with the time going on.Moreover,these treated microstickies dispersed into superfine particles while the temperature increased.The higher temperature,the smaller particles generated.However,the shear strength from the stirring action has a different effect on the behavior of these microstickies.When the stirring rate was low,these microstickies gathered into new and bigger particles.Instead,they dispersed and become smaller particles with the strong shear action from the high stirring rate.Via measuring the conductivity and cationic demand of the whitewater system,it can be found that the physicochemical characteristics on the surface of these small particles changed and the whole system need to reach a new balance.This work revealed the behavior of macrostickies treated by esterase and provided a reference for the application of enzyme in papermaking.
