EFFECT OF FIBER COMPOSITION AND PAPER STRUCTURE ON THE EDGE PENETRATION VALUE OF LIQUID PACKAGING BOARD

Edge penetration is an important property for the manufacturing process and utilization of liquid packaging board(LPB).The cut surface of LPB board will be exposed in the die-cutting process. The liquid will permeate from the edge part into the inside of paper. The sizing degree, paper structure and fiber swelling of the board will determine the edge penetration of LPB.In this paper, the effects of fiber composition and paper structure on the edge penetration were investigated. The results showed that the dosage of rosin sizing agent was 1.5%,the edge penetration value was 1.77 kg/m2.The edge penetration value of sheets made from UBKSP(34°SR)was much lower than from BCTMP(1.73 kg/m2 vs 19.25 kg/m2).Sheets made from mixture of UBKSP and poplar BCTMP at a ratio of 7:3 would obtain a better edge penetration value(3.74 kg/m2).Furthermore,the flow resistance performance of sheets increased 28%under the moderate pressing pressure(0.4MPa).
