EFFECT MECHANISM OF MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF CHITOSAN ON ITS APPLICATION AS SURFACE SIZING AGENT
Surface sizing is an effective approach for increasing the surface properties of paper,and the effect is closely related with the property of surface sizing agent.Chitosan as a surface sizing agent has been used in papermaking,and shows different properties.In this study,the properties of the paper treated with chitosan were investigated.The results showed that the properties of surface sized paper were affected by the molecular weight of chitosan.With the reduction of molecular weight,the surface strength of paper was decreased and the internal bond strength was increased.The SEM confirmed the High-Mw chitosan can be remained onto the surface of paper and formed a film,but the Low-Mw chitosan can permeate into pores of fibers,which confirmed by XRD.The surface strength of sized paper was dramatically affected by the amount of chitosan sized onto the surface of paper result from the forming of the film.The more dosage of chitosan was used,the better film was formed and the higher surface strength of paper was achieved.
