INFLUENCE OF HOT-CALENDARING PROCESS ON THE STRUCTURE AND PROPERTIES OF PPTA PAPER-BASED MATERIALS
In this work, the employment of hot-calendaring process on the structure and the properties of poly(para-phenylene terephthalamide)(PPTA)paper was investigated. The microstructure of fracture surface, different bonding behaviors between PPTA fibers and PPTA pulp, and the total amount of oxygen-containing groups of the fibers surface before and after hot-calendaring process were researched. Then,we studied the synergistic effects of temperature and pressure on the mechanical properties of PPTA paper-based materials. The results show that the mechanical properties remain the same only in the condition of high temperature.Higher pressure can improve the strength to a limited extent due to an unimproved paper structure.Only in the synergistic effects of temperature and pressure, the tensile strength and the dielectric strength can reach the optimal values,56.6 N·m/g and 27.6 kV/mm,respectively.The hot-calendaring process significantly contributes to increasing the total amount of oxygen-containing groups, raising form 7.17%to 31.87%after hot-calendaring.This research suggested a significant reinforcement and interfacial bonding-improving potential of hot-calendaring process for the production of functional PPTA paper-based composite materials, which is helpful to give rise to avoiding and solving some unexpected phenomena during the hot-calendaring process.
