Modification of Chitosan and Its Effect on Chitosan/Montmorillonite Nanocomposites

  Chitosan/montmorillonite nanocomposites used in the traditional paper,can improve the paper of water vapor and oxygen barrier capacity as well as antibacterial properties.To expand the scope of application of water absorbent paper or paperboard in the field of packaging,and can replace the traditional plastic packaging materials,reduce the pollution of the environment.However,chitosan(CTS)can not be dispersed and dissolved in water well in practical application,which limits its application.In order to increase the water solubility of chitosan,the modification of carboxymethylation for chitosan have been studied with chloroacetic acid(ClCH2COOH)as grafting modification agent.Besides,the intercalation montmorillonite nanocomposites have been prepared by the intercalation of carboxymethyl chitosan(CM-CTS)in sodium based montmorillonite(Na+-MMT).The modification condition of CM-CTS was optimized through orthogonal experiment with the effect of CM-CTS intercalated Na+-MMT as the analytical standard.The structure of the product was characterized by FT-IR,1H-NMR and XRD.The results of FT-IR and 1H-NMR showed that the carboxyl group was introduced into the chitosan,and the carboxymethyl chitosan was formed.And the XRD results showed that the CM-CTS has been successfully inserted into the inter layers of Na+-MMT.The optimum condition for synthesizing the CM-CTS was as following: the reaction time was 6hr,reaction temperature was 60℃,m(ClCH2COOH)/m(CTS)was 3 and m(NaOH)/m(CTS)was 4.5.XRD results showed that the intercalation effect of modified chitosan on montmorillonite was better than that of chitosan.The interlayer spacing of unmodified chitosan/montmorillonite is 1.54nm,which is increased by 0.56nm than that of pure montmorillonite,and the modified chitosan can form a good exfoliated chitosan/montmorillonite nanocomposites.
