PREPARATION OF ULTRAFINE STARCH PARTICLES BY GRINDING AND ITS APPLICATION IN PAPER COATING
The use of cooked starch as paper coating binder is limited due to its high viscosity and seriously deteriorating coating gloss,although the advantages of biodegradation capability,acceptably cohesive force and comparatively low cost.Starch based bio-latex with size of nanometer or sub-micrometer scale has been developed recently to overcome the shortcomings.In this study,ultrafine starch particles(UFSP)were prepared by a mechanical grinding approach using a DYNOmill combined with light chemical pre-treatment.Model coating colors containing series dosage of UFSP were applied to base paper,and the properties of final coated paper were evaluated.The results showed that ultrafine starch particles were disc-shaped with a median diameter of 167 nm.Water retention capability of paper coating colors were improved considerably with the addition of ultrafine starch,water retention value decreasing by nearly 40%to 87 g/m2 as 3 pph styrene-butadiene latex was substituted by starch in the formulation.High shear rate viscosity of coating colors with no more than 2 pph starch were similar to the control coating as shear strain rate exceeding 2 000 s-1.The properties and performance of coated paper were comparable to the control coated paper with single synthesized latex binder.Paper gloss was 59.7%and 58.2%separately for samples with and without starch,while printing gloss was 79.0%and 78.8%.Surface strength of two kinds of paper was 0.96m/s and 0.90m/s respectively,while ink absorptivity was 34%and 33%.This contribution demonstrates a promising approach to obtain sub-micrometer scale sized starch particles for paper coating.
