STUDY ON PVA/KAOLIN CLAY COATED ECO-FRIENDLY BARRIER PAPER

  The resistance of wood fiber paper to water,grease and water vapor is usually supplied by means of immersing the base paper into hydrophobic oil,laminating with plastic or metal films and barrier coating.Impregnating oil and combining films may cause waste package paper difficult to recycle or degrade owing to their strong binding force and non-degradation performance.With the aggravating environmental pressure,eco-friendly barrier coating has got extensive attention by experts at home and abroad.In this study,degradable polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)and kaolin clay pigment were mainly used to prepare coatings,and applied to base paper.By measuring coated paper barrier properties,e.g.,water absorptiveness(Cobb60 value),Hercules sizing degree(HST),oil resistance(KIT),water vapor transmission rate(WVTR),optimal coating formulation and process were proposed.By characterizing the coating microstructures with scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and mercury porosimeter,the barrier mechanism of PVA/kaolin clay coating was discussed.The results showed that Cobb value and water vapor transmission rate of coated paper decreased by 61.4%and 98.6%respectively compared with the base paper when the pre-coating is 0.98 g/m2 and top-coating is about 3.23g/m2,and Hercules sizing degree rose by 337.2 times,oil resistance grade increased from 0 to 12.The optimum drying temperature for wet coating layer is 170℃,and the weight ratio of PVA to kaolin clay in the coating color is 50:50.It was supposed that PVA/kaolin clay coating improved paper smoothness considerably and decreased pore size remarkably by filling pores on the paper surface and forming an even film,thus enhancing paper barrier performance.The coated paper showed good repulpability.
