Fabrication of water-repelling paper by surface coating using modified calcium carbonate particles and reactive biopolymer binder
Paper is an attractive packaging material due to its sustainability.It is desired to enhance the water resistance of paper to meet specific requirements in modern packaging field.This research aims to fabricate water-repelling paper with low cost and nontoxic materials.Commercial precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC)particles were modified by stearic acid and incorporated with soybean oil-based binder as a water repelling coating agent.The water-repelling efficiency of the coated paper was highly dependent on the ratio of stearic acid/PCC as well as the binder content in the coating formula.PCC modified with 15wt%stearic acid was efficient in increasing the water contact angle(WCA)of the coated paper to 146° at a coating weight of 5 g/m2.The binder synthesized from acrylated epoxidized soybean oil(AESO)through a Michael addition reaction possesses a potential degradability due to the triglyceride structure in the polymer chain.It was found that the surface pretreatment of PCC with stearic acid prior mixing with AESO reactive binder played an important role in improving the WCA.A WCA of 162° has been achieved when modified PCC was mixed with AESO binder at a concentration of 20 wt%; however,a WCA was only 138° if the unmodified PCC was used under the same condition.A concentration of AESO at 40%was proved to be sufficient for the adherence of the particles to paper substrates and give paper the best water repelling performance.
