A PHOTO-CATALYTIC REACTOR FOR DEGRADING GASEOUS POLLUTANTS IN PAPER MILLS
In order to degrade the main gaseous pollutants in paper mills,a photo-catalytic reactor was developed and its performances were studied in the paper.Setting a double strainer at the entrance of the reactor for the removal of solid particles in the air, illuminating under ultraviolet light, series of honeycomb aluminum meshes coated with nanometer-titanium dioxide played an important role in the degradation of gaseous pollutants in the air.Three kinds of polluted substrates were selected to assess the degrading performance of the developed photo-catalytic reactor:(A)Formaldehyde;(B)Benzene;(C)Mixture of formaldehyde and benzene. The performance tests of the reactor showed that:(1)Both of the formaldehyde and benzene could be completely degraded, but the degrading time needed for benzene was much longer than that for formaldehyde, and the degradation rate of benzene decreased with the increase of initial concentration of benzene;(2)Acting as a simulated ambient air in paper mills,a mixture of formaldehyde and benzene was also degraded with the reactor. The tested result revealed that: the reaction process of formaldehyde in the mixture was different from that in its single form,it spent about two times longer time to be degraded than that for its single form; and the tendency of the reaction process of benzene was almost the same in either case, but it only took half time to be completely degraded than that for its single form.
