EXTRACTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF CELLULOSE NANOCRYSTALS FROM CORN COB ETHANOL BIORESIDUE

This study examined the preparation of cellulose nanocrystals(CNC)from corn cob ethanol bioresidue using carboxymethylation-assisted high pressure homogenization. The introduction of carboxymethylate group enlarged the Zeta potential of resulting products and promoted a more stable suspension system. Thus, the carboxymethylation can facilitate the defibrillation of fibers reflected in the changes of particles size and product yield. But excessive DS of carboxymethylation can lead to the dissolution of fibers in water. When delignified bioresidue with DS of 0.098 passed through homogenizer 10 times at 70 MPa,the obtained CNC had the width of 5~20 nm and the length of 100~300 nm.
