PREPARATION OF QUATERNIZED CARBOXYMETHYL CHITOSAN OLIGOSACCHARIDE/ORGANIC RECTORITE COMPOSITES
Rectorite(REC)is a type of layered silicate and has been studied in wastewater treatment of paper industry because of its excellent adsorption capacity. The adsorption ability of REC is related to its surface and interlayer properties, which can be adjusted by intercalation process. In this work we use biopolymer quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan oligosaccharide(QCMCO)as intercalator to prepare quaternized carboxymethyl chitosan oligosaccharide/organic rectorite composites(QCOOR),and the effect of substitution degree of carboxymethyl group(DSCM)and quaternary ammonium groups(DSQ)on the interaction of QCMCO with OREC was studied with X-ray Diffraction(XRD),fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),zeta potential and thermal stability(TGA).The results indicated that there was strong interaction between QCMCO and OREC.The exfoliated QCOOR was obtained when DSCM and DSQ was about 88%and 75%,respectively.The intercalation of QCMCO into OREC is majored by quaternary ammonium groups, and can be controlled with carboxymethyl groups. Moreover, the intercalated QCMCO changed the zeta potential of OREC(+18.5 mV)to negative(-11.2 mV)or more positive(+62.4 mV).Thermal stability of the exfoliated QCOOR was lower than those of intercalated composites. This study showed that changing the DSCM and DSQ,chitosan/rectorite composites with different interlayer distances and zeta potential for various adsorption purposes can be obtained.
