EFFECT OF PULP REFINING INTENSITY WITH CELLULASE PRETREATMENT ON REDUCING PAPER WATER VAPOR TRANSMISSION RATE(WVTR)

Cellulase pretreatment of bleached softwood kraft fiber before laboratory refining in reducing WVTR of handsheets was investigated in this study.Contrary to no cellulase pretreatment, lower WVTR values were observed for handsheets with a cellulase dosage of 0.5 FPU pretreatment before refining. In addition,WVTR reduced sharply with the increase of refining intensity, especially for the sample with cellulase pretreatment.Cellulase pretreatment combined with 7500 revolutions refining during pulp pretreatment was enough to reduce WVTR(50%RH and 23 ℃)of the paper by 83%.With the aid of cellulase pretreatment, fiber morphology and hydrophobicity dramatically changed with refining intensity. The role of cellulase pre-treatment in reducing WVTR was revealed by SEM,atomic force microscopy(AFM)and water contact angle test.
