MECHANISM STUDY ON SULFONATED LIGNIN PROMOTE ENZYMATIC SACCHARIFICATION OF LIGNOCELLULOSE

Effect of sulfonated lignin(SL)on the enzymatic hydrolysis of different lignocellulosic biomass was investigated to understand the mechanism of SL promoting enzymatic saccharification. The results indicated that the enzymatic digestibility of acid bisulfite(AS)pretreated poplar increased from 44%without SL addition to 63.7%with 0.2 g/g-substrate SL addition at pH 5.0.However,SL had no obvious influence on the enzymatic digestibility of lignin-free lignocellulosic biomass.SL also exhibited a little inhibitory effect on the enzymatic hydrolysis of acid chlorite(AC)delignified masson pine. The results demonstrate that the effect of SL on enzymatic hydrolysis varies with the property and distribution of lignin in materials. In addition, when pH increased to 5.7,the enzymatic digestibility of AS-pretreated poplar decreased to 52.6%with SL addition, which was cause by the elevated pH may weaken the electrostatic interaction between cellulase and SL.Because the surface charges of SL decreased from-0.63 mmol/g to-0.38 mmol/g with pH increased to 5.7.The study on the effect of SL on cellulase adsorption to substrate demonstrates SL may bind with cellulase to form SL-cellulase complex. Therefore, the SL-cellulase complex which was influenced by the property and the distribution of lignin in substrate,as well as the hydrolysis pH,may be the key factors for SL promoting enzymatic saccharification of lignocellulose.
