Biomass carbon dots as a sensitive “on-off fluorescent probe for Fe(Ⅲ)and promising “on off-on sensor for antioxidants

Biomass-based Carbon dots(CDs)have shown great potential in fluorescent sensing and detection of biological or chemical targets because of their photostability and biocompatibility. In this work,value-added CDs with inherent nitrogen-doping were prepared from lignin,an abundant natural biomass waste,in mild condition.Bright blue light emission with fluorescence quantum yield of up to 6.37%was observed with these CDs.We found that the photoluminescence of these CDs could be selectively and instantly quenched(on-off)by Fe(Ⅲ)with a detection limit of 0.66 μM.The quenching behavior followed a linear trend with a Ksv of 7718.7 M-1.Moreover,the quenched fluorescence could be recovered(on-off-on)by the addition of ascorbic acid to the quenching system. An interesting “on-off-on phenomenon was demonstrated, indicating a promise sensing system for instant detection of antioxidants both quantitatively and qualitatively.
