DEPOLYMERIZATION OF LIGNIN CATALYZED BY NI-MG-AL HYDROTALCITE-LIKE IN SUPERCRITICAL ETHANOL SOLVENT

  Lignin is often obtained as waste products of pulp and paper industry and typically used as fuel to produce processing steam and electricity after burning.However,for optimal use of the renewable resources and the economy of the whole process of biorefinery,the lignin as byproducts of pulp mill should be processed to give value-added products such as transportation fuels or diverse chemicals,rather than just being burned simply.Lignin produced in the pulping process with high molecular weight and three-dimensions construction is hard to be depolymerized to monomers at general chemical conditions,which limits its application.In this paper,supercritical ethanol solvent process catalyzed by hydrotalcite-like catalysts was employed to depolymerize the poplar lignin produced from ethanol organosolve pulping process.A series of hydrotalcite-like catalysts with various ratios of n(Mg2+)to n(Ni2+)were prepared by chemical co-precipitation method.The properties of obtained catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR)and scanning electron microscope(SEM)techniques.The effects of catalysts prepared with various mole ratios of Mg2+/Ni2+(0,4,8,16)on the composition and yields of depolymerized products were evaluated by gas chromatography-mass spectrum(GC-MS).The results of GC-MS analysis confirmed that the depolymerized products of lignin were mainly composed of aromatic hydrocarbons,esters,alcohols,aldehydes,phenols and small amount of other compounds.The yields of aromatic hydrocarbons,aldehydes and esters in depolymerized products were higher than that of other molar ratios,when the molar ratio of Mg2+to Ni2+in catalyst was 8,However,the highest yields of phenolic substances were found in the depolymerized products catalyzed with the hydrotalcite-like catalysts without the addition of Mg2+.
