A STRATEGY TO IMPROVE ENZYMATIC SACCHARIFICATION OF WHEAT STRAW BY ADDING WATER-SOLUBLE LIGNIN PREPARED FROM SODA PRETREATMENT SPENT LIQUOR
Wheat straw was pretreated by sodium hydroxide at different alkali charge. The spent liquor was collected to isolate lignin at pH 2 by adding mineral acid. The precipitated lignin was then classified into two fractions(pH 2–5 and > 5,expressed as AL1 and AL2)through pH adjustment. The fraction AL2 was sulfomethylated to obtain the water-soluble lignin preparation SAL2.Two prepared water-soluble lignin samples,i.e.AL1 and SAL2,was used as additives for enhancing the enzymatic sugar conversion of soda-pretreated wheat straw. Both AL1 and SL2 could improve the substrate enzymatic digestibility(SED)at a certain dosage. However, the addition of AL1 and ASL2 decreased the SED of bleached wheat straw. The results indicate that the effect of water-soluble lignin on SED is substrate lignin dependent. This finding makes it possible to build an economical internal circulation system of reusing the dissolved lignin in spent liquor for enhancing enzymatic sugar conversion.
