Enhancement of lignin removal from pre-hydrolysis liquor of aspen by pectinase treatment

Lignin removal is essential for value-added utilization of hemicelluloses sugars in the pre-hydrolysis liquor(PHL)produced in kraft-based hardwood dissolving pulp industry. The cationic polymers have been used to remove the lignin especially colloidal lignin from the PHL by flocculation. But the anionic substances in PHL negatively affected the efficiency of cationic polymers. In this paper, pectinase was used to treat the PHL of aspen for the degradation of polygalacturonic acid,an important source of anionic charge of PHL,and the effects of pectinase treatment of PHL on the lignin removal and hemicelluloses sugars loss in the following cationic polymers treatment were evaluated. The result showed that, treatment of PHL with poly dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride(Poly-DADMAC)caused the decrease of PHL turbidity and the removal of lignin.Compared to the PHL without pectinase treatment, the cationic demand of PHL decreased by 22-37%after pectinase treatment for 8 hours at 40oC and enzyme dosage of 200-1800 u/L PHL.The pectinase treatment improved the efficiency of Poly-DADMAC for lignin removal.Compared to the PHL without pectinase treatment, after treated with Poly-DADMAC at the same dosage, the turbidity of pectinase treated PHL was much lower, and the lignin removal for pectinase treated PHL caused by cationic polymer was more than doubled at a reduced cationic polymers dosage.
