ENHANCEING THE STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF PAPER BY MICROFIBRILLATED CELLULOSE
Microfibrillated cellulose(MFC)offers interesting potential as a native fiber with mechanical performance that exceeds other plant fibers used in commercial products. In this study, the strength properties of paper were investigated after the addition of industrial scale-produced MFC,cationic starch(CS),or a combination of CS and MFC.The strength properties of paper were enhanced by MFC,CS,and especially the combined addition of CS and MFC.The optimal conditions included1.5 wt.%CS and 4 wt.%MFC,which resulted in a tensile index and tear index of 18.93 N·m/g and 5.47 mN·m2/g, respectively. The morphology of handsheets was characterized by scanning electron microscopy.A model was proposed to explain the possible mechanism of CS and MFC influence on the strength properties of paper.
