Improve membrane filtration of prehydrolysis liquor for hemicellulose recovery by PAC flocculation
The prehydrolysis of wood is being deemed as a significant facet for the biorefinery of forest biomass because a great amount of soluble oligosaccharides(OS)and monosaccharides are generated owing to the autohydrolysis of hemicelluloses.Specific elimination of non-saccharide compounds(NSCs)from prehydrolysis liquor(PHL)for hemicellulose-derived saccharides(HDSs)separation is coincident with concept of biorefinery.Recovery of these compounds can be accomplished with membrane processes. However, membrane has a high fouling tendency which might lead to inefficient process operations due to decreased filtration capacity and increased costs. In this study, foulants elimination from PHL by flocculation and lime was studied aiming to reduce the membrane fouling. The results showed that flocculation by polyaluminium chloride(PAC)at 500 mg/L prior to microfiltration improved the flux over 102 folds for a volume reduction factor of 10.Analysis of chemical compositions showed that the lipophilic extractives and high molecular weight lignin were the key foulants for membrane fouling.
