Intelligent pH-responsive polyurethane composite based on MCC grafted with azo polymers

A novel pH-responsive composite was prepared by grafting azo-contained polymer on microcrystalline cellulose(MCC)blended with polyurethane because the Poly 6-4-(4-methoxyphenyl-azo)phenoxy hexyl methacrylate(PMMAZO)is a liquid-crystalline polymers(LCP),which is potential to use in optical information storage, holographic imaging and non-linear optics. In the present work,PMMAZO was grafted on MCC via atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP).MCC was dewatered and reacted with 2-bromoisobuturyl bromide under catalyst to produce macro-initiator for polymerization, the initiator-modified MCCs surface grafting rate is 16.28%,identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. On the formed macro-initiator of MCC,PMMZAO was grafted with CuBr.The structure of the PMMAZO-graft MCC were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR).The PMMAZO-graft MCCs surface grafting rate is 13.06%.A polyurethane composite film was made by solvent casting method with the PMMAZO-graft MCC and polyurethane as matrix. This film showed visually pH response. When the film was soaked in acidic solution,it becomes red,and then soaked in alkali solution,it becomes yellow. The properties of this composite is potential to apply for acid-alkali measurement visually and facilely.
