Forestry residues,such as tree barks,could be a rich source of novel biologically or pharmaceutically active substances,which are relative unexplored.The search of such naturally bioactive compounds isolated from tree residue is a permanent attraction and challenge,which still leads to new discoveries.Pinus massoniana L.,a pine species distributed widely in Asian,American and European countries,has been extensively used as a raw material in puling industry worldwide.Nevertheless,barks of P.massoniana are treated as residues and discarded before pulping.On the other hand,P.massoniana barks have long been employed in folk remedies to cure various disorders in China.However,to date,extractives responsible for the species pharmaceutical functions are still remain unknown.In this work,chemical constituent investigation of extractives from P.massoniana barks led to the isolation of a new ursane-type triterpene saponin which was elucidated as ursolic acid 3-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl(1→6)-β-D-glucopyranoside-28-O-β-D-glucopyranosi de(IV),together with three known triterpenoid compounds,ursolic acid(I),oleanolic acid(II),and oleanolic acid 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside(III).The structures of the isolated extractives were elucidated mainly based on combined spectroscopic techniques(IR,UV,MS,1D and 2D NMR).It is note-worthy that this is the first time to report the four triterpenoids from barks of P.massoniana.
