Kinetic study of hemicellulose and lignin release from bamboo during alkaline extraction

The present work aimed to study dissolution of hemicellulose and lignin during alkaline extraction of bamboo, and investigate their relations.Effects of initial alkali concentration, temperature and time were considered, and dynamics models were developed to calculate dissolution rates. The major sugar unit in bamboo alkaline extracted hemicellulose was xylose, followed by glucose and arabinose, indicating a linear structure of the hemicellulose obtained, which was composed by xylan backbone with side chains. And the hemicellulose dissolution was increased with initial alkali concentration, about 54.07%of xylose in bamboo dissolved into alkaline solution.Meanwhile less than 4.00%of glucose dissolved showing that degradation of cellulose remained at low level in alkaline extraction.Compared to hemicellulose, dissolution of lignin increased linearly with temperature, but slowly with high initial alkali concentration, indicating that hemicellulose with lower lignin could obtain by alkaline extraction method under certain conditions. So dynamics models of dissolution of hemicellulose and lignin were developed to evaluate the relation between them, and help expanding application of hemicellulose in polymer.
