MICROWAVE-ASSISTED ACID PRETREATMENT OF BAGASSE FOR REDUCING SUGAR PRODUCTION

Conversion and utilization of bagasse biomass have attracted much attention because of its abundance and low cost.In this study, the acid hydrolysis of bagasse biomass to produce reducing sugars(glucose, xylose, arabinose)was carried out under the microwave irradiation. The influence of reaction conditions on sugar yields was comparatively discussed. The treated solid residues were characterized by SEM,TGA and XRD.Results showed that the addition of inorganic acid(sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid)and organic acid(oxalic acid and maleic acid)with different concentrations had the significant impact on xylose yields, and oxalic acid was more conducive to the production of xylose. When the oxalic acid concentration was 0.4 mol·L-1,the xylose yield was up to 95.8%(respect to the total xylose in the initial raw material)under condition that reacted at 120 oC for 10 min with a solid-liquid of 1:20.Among inorganic acid, sulphuric acid had the best catalytic performance,by which xylose yield of 90.5%was obtained when the concentration was 0.4 mol·L-1.It was also found that the xylose yield of 98.8%was achieved using 0.4 mol·L-1 oxalic acid catalysts under the optimized reaction conditions(120 oC,10 min,a solid-liquid ratio of 1:50 g·mL-1),while the maximum yield of arabinose was 5.7%.The highest glucose yields 5.7%reached at 150 oC for 15 min with a solid-liquid ratio of 1:20.After the treatment, the surface morphology of pretreated bagasse became looser and the thermal stability declined slightly, whereas little change was occurred in the crystalline structure of solid residue.
