One-pot NaOH/urea Pretreatment and Saccharification of Corn Stover for Fermentable Sugar Production
NaOH/urea solution at the low temperature was developed to dissolve cellulose for functional cellulose materials.Recently,NaOH/urea solvent was used to pretreat lignocellulose and showed a great potential in lignocellulose pretreatment.Pretreatment of corn stover using NaOH/urea at low temperature can be highly effective at reducing the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass. However, this pretreatment typically requires extensive washing of the biomass to remove residue chemicals. The excessive use of water and waste disposal associated with washing poses a challenge for the scale-up of this technology. Here,we demonstrate an one-pot,wash-free process that combines NaOH/urea pretreatment and saccharification into a single vessel and investigate the effects of substrate loading, enzyme loading, and surfactant supplementation on sugar yield. This one-pot process liberated more than 90%glucose and 90%xylose with the optimums condition.
