Oxidative cracking of lignin for production of aromatics and organic acids under mild conditions
Alkali oxidative cracking with molecular oxygen was demonstrated to be an effective method to depolymerize lignin under moderate conditions. In this study,ammonia-extracted lignin from corn stover, which is a by-product from biomass pretreatment, was depolymerized by oxygen to value-added products. The identified products by GC-MS,NMR,and HPLC included mono-aromatic compounds(such as vanillin,p-coumaric acid, vanillic acid, acetovanillone etc.)and organic acids(such as oxalic, acetic, formic acids,etc.).The overall yield of quantified aromatics and organic acids varied from 24%to 58%under the investigated conditions. It was found that the yields and compositions of the products were dependent on the reaction conditions(temperature, reaction time, and oxygen).Oxygen played a crucial role in the lignin depolymerization, but excessive oxygen at high temperature led to further decomposition of the mono-aromatics to organic acids.
