PREPARATION OF ANTIBACTERIAL NANOFIBRILLATED CELLULOSE FILM THROUGH IN-SITU SYNTHESIS OF ZINC OXIDE

  Nanofibrillated cellulose(NFC)exhibits a good film-forming capacity and barrier ability against gas transmission which make it a potential packaging material.The use of NFC films in foodstuff packaging brings up an antibacterial requirement for it to reduce undesirable bacteria in foodstuffs.In this paper,a new type of Zinc Oxide(ZnO)modified NFC was prepared and the antibacterial property of the film was investigated.ZnCl2 was used as solvent for NFC swelling and served as Zn2+ion for ZnO growth reaction.ZnO modified NFC was fabricated through in-situ synthesis and ZnO/NFC composite films were prepared.The surface features of ZnO-modified NFC were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and nanoparticle size analyzer.The minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)of ZnO modified NFC against Escherichia coli(E.coli)was 0.3~2.5 mg/ml.The reduction rate was about 50%,indicating significant antibacterial activities of the ZnO/NFC composite film against E.coli.The ZnO/NFC composite film has a potential application prospect in the field of antibacterial packaging.
