PREPARATION OF CLEEULOSE-LIGNIN HYDROGELS AND THEIR APPLICATION IN REMOVAL OF METHYLENE BLUE DYE FROM WATER
Hydrogels are natural or synthetic crosslinked polymeric networks that can absorb large amounts of water and still are insoluble in aqueous solution.The hydrogels produced by natural polymers,eg.,natural polysaccharides,lignin or other biomass,exhibits many favorable properties,such as biocompatibility,biodegradability,green,environmental protection and low cost,and high potential to be used in various fields,including pharmaceuticals and biomedical implants.Preferable cellulose-lignin hydrogel was prepared through a two-step procedure consisting of dissolution of cellulose in NaOH/urea aqueous solution with further mixing with ethanol organosolv lignin,followed by chemical crosslinking with epichlorohydrin.The crosslinking between cellulose and lignin was confirmed by the technique of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR).The swelling ability and morphologies of the obtained cellulose-lignin hydrogels were also comprehensively characterized in this paper.The effects of weight ratios of lignin to cellulose on the swelling ability and morphologies of prepared hydrogels were also evaluated.It was found that the swelling ratios of hydrogels were decreased with the weight ratio of lignin to cellulose increasing.When the dosage of lignin was 0,the swelling ability of hydrogels were the highest and the maximum swelling degree was 427%.Furthermore,the application of cellulose-lignin hydrogels in removal of methylene blue dye from water was investigated.The results showed that the removal efficiency of methylene blue dye could be influenced by the compositions of hydrogels.When the weight ratio of lignin to cellulose was 2:1,the removal efficiency of methylene blue dye was the highest up to 23.25 mg/g at room temperature.
