PREPARATION OF NOVEL REGENERATED CELLULOSE FILM USING ORGANIC ELECTROLYTE SOLUTIONS(OES)
The use of ILs in the dissolution of cellulose requires high temperatures that cause cellulose depolymerization(thus, the mechanical properties are negatively affected),and high viscosity of the cellulose solution. In this study,we used organic electrolyte solutions(OES)consisting of 1-ethyl-3-ethyl-imidazolium acetate(EmimAc)and dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO)to dissolve cotton linter at room temperature for preparing the regenerated cellulose(RC)film. The dissolution process and the viscosity of the cellulose/OES solution were investigated. Results showed that the molar fraction of EmimAc per OES in the range of 0.2 to 0.4 can rapidly dissolve cotton linter at room temperature, due to the synergistic effect of EmimAc and DMSO.The addition of DMSO had significantly decreased the viscosity of the cellulose solution,in comparison with the control(the EmimAc only).Notably, the DP of the RC film was much higher than that of the control film, indicating significant improvement of mechanical properties. Thus, this study provides a novel, simple and low-cost approach to prepare RC film with strong mechanical properties.
