Preparation of superhydrophobic Nanocellulose Aerogel for the selective sorption of oil from oil-water mixture
Oil spill is harmful to the marine environment due to its destructive effects on ecosystem.Currently, the treatment of water pollution caused by oil spill has aroused extensive attention.Lots of techniques have been developed to remove oil from oil-contaminated water including physical, biological, and chemical methods.Among these techniques, using oil-absorbing material to decontaminate oil-water mixture turns to be a good choice. In this paper,Nanocellulose Aerogels(NCA)were prepared as superabsorbents by freeze-drying of 2,2,6,6-Tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy(TEMPO)-oxidized cellulose nanofibril(TOCN)dispersions at the concentration of 0.2%,0.5%,1.0%w/w,respectively.Then the NCAs were hydrophobization with modifying by low surface energy material through Chemical Vapour Deposition(CVD).The surface morphology and wettability were characterized by Scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and Static contact angle analyzer. The as-prepared aerogels had ultralow density(2.0-10.5 mg cm-3),high porosity(99.7%-98.8%)and super-hydrophobicity with the water contact angle of about 150°,which enabled the aerogels to selectively absorb oil from oil-water mixture effectively. The absorption capacities of hydrophobic nanocellulose aerogels for pump oil could be up to 140 g g-1.Therefore,the nanocellulose aerogels might have the opportunities for further application in treatment of oil spillage.
