ROLL-TO-ROLL COATING OF CELLULOSE NANOFIBER SUSPENSIONS

Recent environmental concerns have motivated the search for bio-based material alternatives to those produced from non-renewable resources. While nano-cellulosic films and coatings have shown promise as a barrier for,e.g.,food packaging, numerous challenges remain before large-scale,low-cost production can be realized. The current work demonstrates that cellulose nanofiber(CNF)suspensions have low apparent vis-cosity in pressure-driven flow at high shear rates, which can be exploited to enable continuous roll-to-roll slot coating of highly viscous,gel-like CNF suspensions on paper.
