Structural Changes of Poplar Wood Lignin during Acetic Acid-Sodium Acetate Buffer Pretreatment Process

Hydrothermal pretreatment of the poplar wood chips was performed in acetic acid/sodium acetate buffer media under a determined condition. To characterize the structural features of lignin in the pretreated poplar wood, milled wood lignin(MWL)isolated from both the native poplar wood and the pretreated wood chips was analyzed by 1H-NMR,13C-NMR,31P-NMR,FT-IR spectroscopy,as well asGPC-MALLS.The results indicated that the lignin remaining in the pretreated wood chips had more phenolic OH group, less aliphatic OH group, higher molecular weight, and narrower polydispersity than the native poplar lignin. The acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer pretreatment promoted the removal of-OCH3 groups and the cleavage of the inter-unit linkages of β-O-4 bond in the lignin.Furthermore, the repolymerization reaction between the lignin molecule happened during the acetic acid-sodium acetate buffer pretreatment process, but it was less than autohydrolysis.
