Enhancing the Physical Strength Properties of APMP by Using Dry Strength Agents

Alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp(APMP)has received increasing interests by virtue of its high yield production(approximately 85%).However,the high fines content, low physical properties and weak bonding capacity hampered its increasing application. In this study,20%and 40%(w/w)ratio of APMP pulp were mixed with bleached kraft pulp to make paper,in which three kinds of dry strength agents(e.g.cationic starch, cationic polyacrylamide, chitosan)were used to increase APMP papermaking properties and physical strength at the dosage of 0.5%,1.0%and 1.5%(w/w).Results showed that the breaking length of handsheet increased with increasing the dry strength agent dosage.Cationic starch(CS)and chitosan improved the tearing index greatly, while cationic polyacrylamide(CPAM)had higher improvement on bursting index when the dry strength agent dosage was less than 1%.CPAM had better performance on tearing index improvement, while CS worked better on bursting index when the agent dosage was above 1%.Bursting index had a great enhancement when chitosan dosage was 0.5%.Whats more, the ring crush increased for all three dry strength agents addition, particularly using CPAM.CS and CPAM were better than chitosan in comprehensive consideration.
