PREPARATION OF IRIDESCENT FILMS BASED ON POLY(VINYL ALCOHOL)AND CELLULOSE NANOCRYSTALS

  Cellulose nanocrystals(CNC)have rod-like nano size and stable suspension when it was dispersed into deionized water.The CNC suspension was demonstrated as transparent colloid state after ultrasound and performance of chiral nematic liquid crystal.Since the self-assembly properties of CNC suspension,the iridescent films could be get after air drying.Hardwood dissolving pulp was used as the raw material for the preparation of CNC by 64%(wt)sulfuric acid hydrolysis for 50min.Polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)was added into CNC suspension to prepare CNC/PVA iridescent films.The properties of CNC/PVA iridescent films were studied by polarizing microscope(POM),scanning electron microscopy(SEM)and tensile strength tester(TST).The stable suspension was formed because of the nano size and the electrostatic repulsion of SO42-on the surface of CNC,the content of SO42-increases with the solid content of CNC.When the concentration of CNC was 2.75%(wt),the Zeta potential was-30mV~-60mV of the CNC suspension,dark blue film was gained after 25℃ air drying for 12h.It was concolorous and friable,PVA was added to enhance its tensile stress and changes the color of the films.The color of CNC/PVA iridescent films were varied to yellow,indigo grass,sky blue,ash black etc.by adding different content of PVA,the tensile stress was become larger when more content of PVA was added.When the ratio of PVA:CNC was 6,maximum tensile stress could be obtained.The strength of the iridescent films provides the possibility for the application of the optical properties.
