Exploratory study on electrochemical corrosion behavior of sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets processed by massive laser shock peening
Sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets is a kind of promising permanent magnetic material. However, poor corrosion resistance has limited its application in industry. In order to improve its corrosion resistance the paper preliminarily investigated the effect of different massive laser shock peening(LSP)impacts(number of replication)on the electrochemical corrosion behavior of sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets in 3.5%NaCl solution.Result showed that LSP could significantly improve its corrosion resistance as long as the impacts was chosen reasonably. As the impacts increased the corrosion rate decreased first and then increased. When impacts reached to 3 the corrosion rate decreased to 18.4%,but when impacts increased to 5 the corrosion rate increased to 1.35 times of the untreated specimen.SEM results revealed for 3 impacts the surface material of the sintered Nd-Fe-B magnets was almost intact. When impacts increased to 5 the surface strengthened layer material peeled off considerably.Peeling off of material increased the surface roughness and corrosion surface area, which would expose the matrix material to corrosive environments and significantly deteriorated the corrosion resistance.
