The Effect of Fibre Configuration and Parameters on Surface Integrity When Cutting CFRP Using Continuous Wave Laser

The marked increase of using carbon fiber reinforced plastic(CFRP)composites in recent years, particularly in the aerospace and automotive industry, promote the application of laser cutting technology for faster and more flexible cutting.Experimental data is presented relating to heat affected zone(HAZ)and surface quality/integrity when using continuous wave(CW)fiber laser cutting CFRP with varying fibre configuration including+45°/-45°and 0°/90°.The effect of typical cutting parameters including laser power, cutting speed and assist gas pressure on laser cutting quality of different type of workpiece materials was investigated. Results showed thatthe lowest level of HAZ wasrecorded in Type 1(+45°/-45°)configuration.The level of HAZ of laser cut CFRP is highly related to fiber orientation.Micrographs showed that cracks, cavities and fiber protruding were the typical defects observed in laser machining.Resin decomposition, deposits together with heavy coating of recast layer were the most prominent damage related to matrix materials.
