A Study of Self-Optimization of Surface Generationfor Ultra-precision Polishing of Freeform Surfaces
The use of freeform surfaces in the optical systems has become more widespread.Freeform surfaces possess non-rotational symmetry whichhas created a lot of research challenges in the design, precision machining and measurement of these surfaces. On the other hand, accurate control of the machining process through modelling and simulation of machining processes, error compensation, and on-machine metrology have attracted a lot of research attention. This paper presents a self-optimization approach for ultra-precision polishingand measurement of freeform surfaces. To realize the technical feasibility,a pilot study of the application of the self-optimization approach for fluid jet polishing of freeform surface is discussed.A multi-sensor metrology system is also presented which enables the in-situ surface measurement capability of machine tools for supporting online compensation of machining errors. The results of the pilot study show that the surface quality of the machined surfaces can be significantly improved.
