Research on damage evolution of skin layer during trimming of CFRP
Different types of machining defects on skin layer of carbon fiber reinforced plastics(CFRP)was classified. Also the influence of carbon fiber angle, workpiece inclined angle and feed rate on the types and evolution of machining defects were analyzed. The results show that the main machining defects are chipping, burrs, avulsion of carbon fiber bundle and delamination. The de-lamination on skin layer can only be found on the 0o layer, and the main machining defects of CFRP with 45o and 90o skin layer is torn of fiber bundle with a small amount of chipping. However some defects of burrs were found on CFRP with 135o skin layer. The feed rate of cutter was the most sig-nificant factor on the occurrence of machining defects especially the avulsion of fiber bundle, and the high workpiece inclined angle makes the defects more sensitive to feed rate. The cutting fore perpendicular to the laminate panel has the direct influence on the occurrence and evolution of de-fects.The machining defects are almost invisible when the cutting force is less than 9~10N.For the CFRP laminates with 135o skin layer, the avulsion of fiber bundle can be avoided, while the burrs are always existing at the same condition.
