Geometric error identification and characterization of a five-axis machine tool

  Position Independent Geometric Errors(PIGEs)of rotary axes of a five-axis machine tool caused by flaws during manufacturing and assembly processes are believed to be a main contributor of inaccuracy.This paper presents a method to investigate geometric characteristics of PIGEs of rotary axes of a five-axis machine tool using a Double Ball Bar(DBB)1.Corresponding geometric models are established to verify the proposed method as well as illustrate particular geometric patterns of each PIGEs.Simulation results are compared with the actual test outcomes for validation purposes.Reasons causing disagreements in PIGEs are given.The presented method is useful to efficiently and effectively diagnose five-axis machine tools with the identification of different geometric patterns of different PIGEs.
