Comparative study on cutting loads for rigid and fixed tapping processes
Tapping is one of the widely used processes for manufacturing internal threads.Due to the characteristic of simultaneous engagement of all flutes, complex cutter geometries,as well as the complicated motions during the tapping-in and retreating-out processes, such an operation is considered to be the most complex and least understood cutting process.Whats more, the mismatch between feed and rotation motion will induce feed e盯or accompanied by re1atively excessive load, which 1eads to breakage of tap tooth and further ruin the parts being machined. In this paper,a series of experimenta1 tests were conducted to comparative1y study the cutting 10ads,especial1y the thrusts, for both rigid tapping(without feed error)and fixed tapping process(with feed error).Based on the analysis of the experimental results, its found that the cutting loads of fixed tapping process are much 1arger than that of the rigid one, which is induced by the indentation between the tap and workpiece. For rigid tapping, the cutting speeds will almost not influence the axial forces, while the cutting speed will affect the axial 10ads a 10t for fixed tapping since the feed error is high1y re1ated to the spindle speed.
