Effect of Cutting Edge Numbers on Cutting Performance and Surface Morphology in Face Milling of Nodular Cast Iron

Tool nose orbit was simulated and milling tests were conducted. The effect of cutting edge numbers on cutting force, chip formation, surface morphology and characterization of surface geometric features were systematically investigated. The results of simulation showed that different measurement locations and directions may lead to different roughness values. It was because of the kinematics of the cutting process. The results of milling tests proved that as the number of cutting edges increase, the cutting force increasedand the surface roughness and tool wear decreased significantly. The effect of the number of cutting edges on surface morphology of different directions andlocationswas also considered. This research was helpful for the study offace milling mechanism, especially the extra-closepatch millingmechanism.
