Experimental investigation into optimal processing conditions for abrasive slurry jet polishing of mold steel

Micro-abrasive slurry jet(MASJ)technology is a non-traditional method based on the micro-abrasive water jet(MA WJ)process, which offers the advantages of MA WJ,inc1uding cold processing, lack of contact, environmental protection, and ease of control, while being more concentrated, uniform and stabilized than MA WJ.MASJ was utilized to polish mold steel in an experiment designed by the Taguchi method, and the effects of polishing parameters on the quality, their significance order, and optimum parameters were analyzed and reported. The results indicate that the abrasive concentration on Ra is highly significant,as are the stand-off distance and working pressure. An effective process parameter combination was obtained by means of an orthogonal experiment, and the surface topography was homogeneous.A dimensional analysis technique was used to formulate the models as functions of the particle impact parameters, target material properties, and major process parameters known to affect material roughness. The model predictions are found to agree strongly with the experimental results.
