Analysis of drilling CFRP technology in aircraft manufacturing industry
Due to the low weights and high mechanical properties, carbon fiber-reinforced plastics(CFRP)has been more widely used in aeronautical and aerospace structures for the fuselage, wing as well as other structural parts.Bolted joints are still the dominant fastening mechanisms used in jointing of primary structural parts.Drilling CFRP is the main processing technology in aircraft manufacture. However, the drilling qualities are affected seriously by the anisotropy of CFRP laminates.Drilling of the CFRP/metal stacks has become a difficult problem in aircraft assembly process, because of entirely difference properties of CFRP and metals.First of all, this paper reviews the drilling process including the chip formation mechanism, drilling force and heat in drilling CFRP and their stacks. Then, the major reasons and influential factors of machining damage are analyzed. The research status of optimizing tool materials and geometry are introduced. Finally, various advanced processes of drilling CFRP and theirs stacks are reviewed and compared. On the basis of the analysis of the present research situation, the application prospect of drilling CFRP is discussed in the Large Aircraft Project in our country.
