An experimental investigation of wear characteristics of pre-coated diamond abrasive in grinding of ceramics

  A new kind of diamond abrasive grains was brazed using Ni-based and Cu-based active powder filler alloy.An experimental investigation was reported on the relationships between the grains wear and machining parameters for grinding ceramics with a new brazed pre-coated diamond grinding tool.Scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS)and X-ray diffraction(XRD)technique analysis were applied to investigate the grain wear characteristics during the grinding ceramic process and the interface characteristics of diamond grains to steel substrate.The results showed that diamond brazing wheels had the advantages in terms of high efficiency on grinding engineering ceramic.The main tool wear was grains fracture in the brazed combined zone.Results proved that the graphitization of diamond grits slightly occurred because of the high grinding temperature and the diamond strength was enough to meet the requirements of machining process when grinding ceramic materials.The experiments demonstrated that the developed safety,high strength and super sharp diamond wheel could efficiency raise machining efficiency of engineering ceramic materials.
